Who is Kerry?
I'm the person that took the detours. I first considered becoming a dietitian in my late teens. I loved food, and it was always part of the conversation. Life took me on a detour through advertising and marketing before my passion for food, science and health eventually led me to university.
I was always curious about the gap between knowing what to do and being able to make it work in real life. During my undergraduate, I came across the non diet approach to health. This provided a foundation to understanding why knowing more does not necessarily make change easier or sustainable, particularly when weight is treated as the outcome. After completing my Bachelor of Science, I undertook postgraduate studies in psychodynamic counselling before finally completing a Master of Dietetics while teaching undergraduate nutrition students, something I did for eight years.
Counselling deepened my appreciation of the barriers to change. Dietetics gave me the scientific knowledge and clinical reasoning to translate evidence into practice and teaching reinforces that information is only useful when it connects with someone’s actual life. When it comes to nutrition, there is no shortage of information or advice, much of it rarely delivers. We also live in a world constantly telling us we are not enough, and marketing teaches us to distrust ourselves, our bodies, our appetites and each other while selling the next revolutionary product, program or transformation to finally fix us. Yet after decades there is far more disappointment than success. I became a dietitian to offer something different.
I bring more than 20 years of study, education and advocacy, alongside a varied career and plenty of life experience, to my work. Together, we combine your knowledge, experience and goals with my professional expertise, using a shared curiosity and a healthy disdain for rigid rules to find creative, practical and realistic options that fit your life and work for you.
Using a non-diet, weight-inclusive approach means health is not reduced to body size. Weight is not a behaviour, nor is it a measure of worth. Instead, we work on finding behaviours to support the kind of health you want and which changes are realistic within your current life and capacity. You are the driver.
Practically this means we focus on and consider things like function, symptoms, energy, enjoyment, capacity, skills, the realities of your life, and your relationship with food and your body. Progress is defined by the outcomes that matter to you. This is because I know health doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It has to coexist with budgets, responsibilities, energy and everything else life throws at us.
Outside of dietetics my downtime is spent pottering in my garden, reading, seeking out the best chai latte in Mandurah and maintaining an on-again, off-again relationship with DIY, while being a slave to a couple of feline dictators and their foster buddies.
